gNappies customisers and the three Rs

November 24, 2015

It’s European Week for Waste Reduction between the 21st and the 29th of November 2015.

We asked our  licensed customisers to tell us a bit about themselves, and how the three Rs, {Reduce waste, Reuse products, Recycle material} have shaped their lives:

Pretty Green Buttons

ewwrIn the UK, the recycling rate has gone from just over 10% to just under 50% in the last 15 years. In recent times we are understanding that we must take steps to preserve and care for the beautiful world around us.
This conscientious modern attitude has brought back many of the things that were second nature to our grandparents and great-grandparents. From growing our own veg to making our own clothes, using eco nappies and reusing and repurposing our old things. Repurposing or ‘up-cycling’ as it has been dubbed since the nineties, is back and is the best form of recycling! But unlike the ‘make do and mend’ era of the past, we see up-cycling not as a necessity, but as a great way to be greener, to be creative, to breathe new life into something we love enough to not just throw it away.

pretty green buttons Television shows like ‘The Great British Sewing Bee’ have shown us that our mothers or grandmothers dress that holds so many memories could be something that we love as much if we add enough ambition, love and creativity into it. When things get worn out over time, such as gNappies or a piece of furniture, there’s no need to throw it away, and the new look we give it could actually make us love it even more! It can be a way to hold onto treasured items and memories, or simply to have some creative fun with the kids.
Up cycling doesn’t just have to be for old things though. It’s also a great way to take something and make it better or more personal. As part of the gNappies official up-cycling programme, I take gNappies old and new and recover them. Sometimes to give old pants a new lease of life, and sometimes to make something unique and beautiful to reflect its owner’s sense of individuality and style.

So whether it’s painting up an old dresser destined for the tip or refashioning a piece of clothing; give up-cycling a go, let’s throw away less and love what we have and together make a happier greener planet.

When I made the decision to stay at home with my little Fletcher bear, I always knew I wanted to do something else alongside being “just a mum”. By the time life with a new baby had settled down into what we now consider normal, I dug out my childhood sewing machine and started to make some clothes for a six month old Fletcher.

IMG_2349I love bright colour combinations, chevrons, arrows, stylised animals, industrial textures… and I wanted them on Fletcher’s clothes too. So Little Bear Bots was born and so was licensed customisation of our beloved hybrid eco nappy brand gNappies. And it has all grown from there.
The idea of repurposing clothes and other fabrics has become a big passion of mine too, and the concept of helping to contribute to circular economy. Partly because of my work customising and up-cycling gNappies but also wanting to get more use out of beloved items of Fletcher’s out of which he so quickly grows. Some things seem too precious to be thrown away but a waste to have sitting in a box un-used; why not get as much use as possible out of something you love!circular-economy-i-i_0

Why do I upcycle? I do it because I love it, I do it because I like to make use of what I have in front of me already, I do it because I feel it’s necessary to keep using what we already have available to us in order to make use of items over and over again.
little cloudsCustomising gNappies gPants not only allows me to be my arty creative self on a daily basis but also enables me to give something of me to my customers, something I’ve designed and created with my own hands, something that person and the next and the next will continue to use and love as much I did when I created it, getting to use wonderful fabrics and to bring a tired well loved gPants back to life is very satisfying, why throw it away when you can give it a new lease of life with a little TLC, I add pretty girly ruffles, hand appliqués, machine embroidered designs and turn those older pants into something fresh and new, returning it back to its owner ready to be worn with pride and to be loved some more for many more years to come.

We discard too many items on a daily basis because we perceive that they are just no use to us anymore, but do we ever stop and think that the item we are about to send to landfill may be of use to someone else as something else? If not do it today save something and turn it into something new you may just like it!
